Cami de Cavalls official
There is no better way of taking in the beauty of Menorca than by walking its glorious coastline – and fortunately for the 21st century visitor to the island, those who lived there in the 13th century have showed us the way…
They created the Cami de Cavalls (literally, the ‘way of the horses’), a 185km track which circles Menorca’s coast and was developed initially as part of the island’s defences against attack from the sea. It was used for many centuries not just by horse-borne militia but also by residents as a vital means of communication. The coming of the British in the 18th century and the building of the Cami d’en Kane, the main highway lining west to east, heralded the end of the coastal path.
The trail was lost for many years and might have disappeared entirely but for a campaign in the 1990s. After restoration and negotiation with private landowners, the Cami de Cavalls was opened to the public in 2010.
The trail is broken up into 20 different sections of between five and 14 km, which enables amateur walkers to tackle the Cami de Cavalls in stages rather than the six-to-10 days that an entire circumnavigation would take.
